CASE STUDIES
PROJECT: Heno (S4C)
Intro
We were tasked with revitalising the theme tune for Heno, a flagship program on S4C, which had been using the same musical introduction for over two decades. With the show transitioning to a new studio and modernised direction, the production company wanted a theme that was both upbeat and energetic, setting the tone for a refreshed viewer experience.
Challenge
The challenge was to create a new musical identity that honored the show’s legacy while aligning with its modernised visual and thematic direction. We needed to develop a theme that would excite existing viewers and attract a fresh audience, all while conveying the show’s spirit of community and engagement.
Approach
We decided to bring a dynamic brass section into the mix, known for its vibrant and invigorating sound. The brass elements were complemented by a lively melody line to inject a sense of freshness and energy into the theme. This choice was made to capture the essence of celebration and excitement, echoing the ethos of the program and enhancing the viewer's connection to the show.
Solution
The new theme is a high-energy arrangement that immediately draws attention and sets an enthusiastic tone for the program. The brass section's robust sound, combined with a lively melody, creates an inviting, celebratory atmosphere. This new theme successfully resonates with existing viewers while appealing to a broader audience, perfectly in sync with Heno's vibrant transformation.
PROJECT: Prynahwn Da (S4C)
Intro
Following the successful revitalisation of the Heno theme, we were presented with the exciting opportunity to create a unique identity for Prynhawn Da, the sister program of Heno that airs in the afternoon on S4C. Despite their historical connection, the production company, Tinopolis, wanted a distinct signature for Prynhawn Da that would differentiate it from Heno.
Challenge
The challenge was to compose a theme that felt fresh and distinct for Prynhawn Da. We needed to create a sound that would suit the program’s daytime slot, making it inviting and warm for the afternoon audience, all while giving it its own unique identity.
Approach
We embraced the essence of a quintessential daytime program by crafting a light, welcoming theme. We used an electric guitar lead line paired with percussive elements to evoke warmth and familiarity while also keeping the tone relaxed and inviting. The composition was designed to be melodious and subtle, perfectly complementing the program’s content and pacing.
Solution
The final theme is a bright, easygoing composition that creates a positive, welcoming atmosphere for Prynhawn Da. The guitar-driven melody, along with the percussive rhythm, sets a pleasant tone for the afternoon slot and enhances viewer engagement. This theme successfully gives Prynhawn Da its own identity.
PROJECT: Siop Siarad (S4C)
Intro
For the late-night chat show Siop Siarad Owain, hosted by the charismatic Owain Wyn Evans, we were tasked with creating a theme tune that captured the vibrant and engaging spirit of the program. With Owain’s background as a drummer, the production was designed to highlight his musical talent while setting the tone for a fun and energetic show.
Challenge
The brief called for a theme tune that would energise the studio audience and captivate viewers at home, similar in mood to The Graham Norton Show. The challenge was to compose a track that reflected the show’s lively atmosphere while also incorporating Owain’s drumming skills and creating an unforgettable opening sequence.
Approach
To meet the brief, we composed an upbeat, disco-style track that would bring a sense of excitement and energy right from the start. To make it even more distinctive, we included vocal elements from the talented Bronwen Lewis, whose dynamic voice added depth and flair to the composition. We also integrated Owain’s drumming, ensuring that his musical talent was a central feature of the opening sequence.
Solution
The final theme is a high-energy disco track that immediately grabs attention, creating a lively and upbeat atmosphere for Siop Siarad Owain. The combination of Owain’s drumming and Bronwen Lewis’s vocals adds a unique touch, making the opening sequence memorable and aligning perfectly with the show’s fun and vibrant spirit.
